Info
The "Whale and Hockey Stick" galaxies, also known as NGC 4631 and NGC 4656 respectively, are two edge-on spiral galaxies located in the constellation Canes Venatici, approximately 30 million light-years away. The Whale Galaxy, NGC 4631, is a barred spiral galaxy with a wedge-shaped form that resembles a whale. The Hockey Stick Galaxy, NGC 4656, is a warped barred spiral galaxy, and its distorted shape is thought to be due to a recent gravitational interaction with the Whale Galaxy.
